Dr. Barbara O'Shea has proudly served as the Member for South Brisbane since October 2024. A dedicated advocate for social equity, Barbara is committed to building a fair and inclusive future for everyone in our community. Her key priorities include addressing the housing crisis, providing support to those experiencing cost-of-living pressures, maintaining safety in our communities, and ensuring robust, well-funded universal healthcare.
Barbara's connection to South Brisbane spans over three decades. She first met her husband while sharing a home as flatmates in West End, and together they chose to establish their careers, and raise their children in this vibrant, diverse community.
Barbara brings expertise from her extensive medical career. She served as a Visiting Medical Officer in Emergency at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and as a Senior Medical Officer in Drug and Alcohol Services with Queensland Health. Her roles have also included Registrar in Psychiatry at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Deputy Director of Medical Services at Greenslopes Hospital.
Barbara's life experiences inform her policy priorities. Growing up in public housing provided the stability needed for quality education and achieving her dream of becoming a doctor, which gives her a deep understanding of the importance of secure housing in creating opportunities. Now, as a mother of three sons in their twenties, Barbara is keenly aware of the challenges faced by renters and first-time homebuyers. These insights drive her determination to advocate for affordable housing and support policies that alleviate cost-of-living pressures.
Barbara firmly believes effective representation starts with genuine care, listening, and active engagement with local residents, community groups, and organisations. She is determined to ensure that all voices in South Brisbane are heard, respected, and represented in the Queensland Parliament.
